Finding Happiness - Cultivating Deep Joy

"I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness—it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude." - BRENÉ BROWN

Erin Mahollitz Finding Happiness

Have you felt like you should be doing something else with your life? That your soul has a purpose, and you are not aligned with it?

For me, there was suffering in not knowing what I was supposed to be doing.

In her poem, The Summer Day, Mary Oliver asks us, “what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

At times I wanted to scream, “I don’t know what the fuck I am supposed to be doing! Someone just tell me.” I was waiting for a sign.

In his book The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho talks of learning to read “the language of the world,” and I wanted so badly to understand what the world wanted me to do with this life.

...

But, what if it was as simple as following your joy?

What lights you up? DO THAT.

What does your heart want? GET THAT.

You will know how aligned you are with your purpose by how good you feel.

For a long time I thought my calling was to be a classroom teacher. I loved working with kids, developing curriculum, and creating a classroom culture. I am good at this work, but it was slowly hurting me. I would become depressed, overwhelmed, and stressed out. Over the summer I would recoup and then repeat a slow decline. Magical Homemaking was born out of a need to find ways to cope with this work that I love.
